A Coast Guard vessel will stop in Nome on its way to cross the Northwest Passage. The voyage will support scientific research and future shipping through the Arctic.
Coast Guard Gears Up For Further Missions in Arctic Region, Operating Out of Kotzebue
Arctic Shield, which started on Saturday, involves the Coast Guard deploying cutters, various aircraft and staff to missions from Dutch Harbor, through the Bering Strait, up to the North Slope. Those deployments include crews from the Coast Guard Cutters Healy, Sherman, and others.
Coast Guard Authorization Act Might Give Icebreaker Second Wind
The potential legislation provides appropriations for the Coast Guard’s budget. Most prominently, it grants an amendment requiring a plan to extend the lifespan of Alaska’s only year-round icebreaker.
