Bailey Vitello finished first in the inaugural Nome-Golovin 200 Sled Dog Race on March 27, completing the nearly 200-mile Nome-Golovin round trip in one day, five hours, and 35 minutes on the trail with a team of 12 dogs.

Hosted for the first time by the Nome Kennel Club, the race also serves as an Iditarod qualifier. Nome Kennel Club president and Nome-Golovin race marshal, Aaron Burmeister, said he hopes this is the first of many Nome-Golovin races.

“It’s something we want to grow with years to come,” Burmeister said.

Seven mushers competed in the race, all finished and earned a share of the $20,000 purse, which pays out to the top nine finishers.
