With candidate filing closed for Nome’s 2026 municipal election, just one name has been entered for each of this year’s six open seats.
It’s the second year in a row that the Nome Common Council has had just one name apply for each of its two open seats. Last year, Adam Lust was the only candidate to replace Cameron Piscoya, who opted not to run again. Longtime council member Mark Johnson ran unopposed and successfully retained his seat.
This year, Adam Martinson filed to keep his seat on the council for another three years. Current council member Maggie Miller did not file to run again. Randy Oles was the only candidate to file to replace Miller’s Seat B on the council. Oles ran for the council in 2012, but was defeated by the incumbent candidate Randy Pomeranz.
Both Utility Board seats held by Derek McLarty and Carl Emmons look poised to remain unchanged, with both candidates filing to return to the board and no candidates filing to run against them.
On the School Board, Meghan Sigvanna Tapqaq filed to retain her seat for another three years. School Board newcomer David O’Neill, who filled the seat vacated by Nancy Mendenhall earlier this year, has filed to finish out the one year left on Mendenhall’s term.
The 2026 Nome Municipal Election will be held on Oct. 6.
