Recently, a series of inspirational messages — based on the incredible biographies of Western Alaskans — have graced KNOM’s airwaves. Thanks to you, our listeners have heard powerful stories of recovery: from addiction, despair, homelessness, isolation, and other problems endemic in the region.

In the past 50 years, not all of KNOM’s support volunteers have been reporters or broadcasters. In the mission’s early days, many volunteers were nurses and doctors.

May 2003: Honoring nurses

May 2, 2003 During National Nurse Week, Norton Sound Health Corporation honors three nurses. They are: Terry Romenesko, RN; Annie Blandford, RN; and Linda Peters, RN, all of whom came to Nome as KNOM support nurses. Each has dedicated more than twenty years of care to patients at the Nome hospital.

By 2014, a Wellness and Sobering Center in Nome

To respond to the need for substance abuse treatment in the Norton Sound, Norton Sound Health Corporation is planning on starting a substance abuse treatment center in Nome. The Wellness and Sobering Center will be based in the old hospital, and may open as early as fall 2014.
