City Council Discussion on Sex Offenders at Seaside Continues; Final Decision Yet to Be Made

The Council was split three-to-three on an ordinance to change the Nome Code of Ordinances to allow sex offenders who are actively receiving treatment to be housed at Seaside. The tiebreaker vote came to Mayor Richard Beneville, who voted yes in favor of moving the ordinance on to the second reading phase.
GCI Expands High-Speed Broadband to Norton Sound Villages

Residents of six Norton Sound villages can expect to see high-speed terrestrial broadband coverage from GCI by the end of 2017, the company says.
NSHC Board of Directors Holds Annual Meeting, Elects Members, Renews Gorn’s Contract

NSHC’s Board of Directors convened in Nome this week for their 47th annual meeting. Yesterday, the Board voted to keep Jacob Ivanoff as the Board Chair. Also, the NSHC Board unanimously approved a new three-year contract, which includes an increased salary, with President and CEO Angie Gorn.

Unalakleet Psychologist Receives National Award for Work in Rural Psychology

Ray Michael Droby was awarded the 2017 Excellence in Rural Psychology Award from the APA, for his more than 20 years of providing mental health services in Nome and the Bering Strait region.
Nome Council in Agreement: NSHC and Community Will Benefit From Vacated Property

Through the passage of an ordinance, NSHC will have use of land on East L Street and East M Street, as well as between East 6th and Greg Kruschek Avenue. City Manager Tom Moran explains these properties won’t go out for bid, but the City is negotiating some form of payment with NSHC.

According to a Norton Sound Health Corporation press release, the NSHC Board of Directors supported the Administration’s decision to “no longer contract with the provider, thereby ending years of over-prescribing narcotics to a group of NSHC patients.”
