City Council Passes FY 2019 Budgets; Deficit is Projected at $1.6 Million

The six present councilmen voted unanimously last night to approve the amended general fund budget as well as the other six fiscal year 2019 City budgets. Those include funds to renovate the Anvil City Science Academy bathrooms, upgrade some of the City’s boilers, and adopt the Port of Nome’s $1,762,969.00 budget.

The Nome Public Schools Board of Education’s regular meeting was dominated by a discussion of severe budget cuts. The board also debated shortening the school calendar to give students the month of August off.

The Nome Public Schools Board of Education unanimously approved two-year contracts for its three principals at its regular meeting Tuesday, during which budget crunches were also a topic of discussion.

Scores are in from the first Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools (or PEAKS) assessment this spring. They show room for improvement at Nome Schools, but Superintendent Shawn Arnold is optimistic.
