About 40 racers registered for the annual Nome-Golovin Snowmachine Race on March 9 at Nome Elementary School. That number is down from last year, according to race manager Kevin Bahnke.

This year’s Nome-Golovin champion was open-class racer Tre West, who finished with a time of 2:05:50. West has been racing in the Nome-Golovin since he was 18, and has competed in other regional snowmachine races as well — he won the Archie Ferguson/Willie Goodwin Sr. Memorial Snowmachine Race in 2018.

The annual Nome-Golovin Snowmachine Race kicks off at noon on March 12, 2022. About 60 racers registered on the night of March 10, which is about average for the Nome-Golovin, Race Manager Kevin Bahnke said.

Former Iron Dog Champion Mike Morgan of Nome is the 2021 winner of the Nome-Golovin Snowmachine Race with a time of 2 hours, 13 minutes and 56 seconds.

The race was originally scheduled to run on Saturday March 13th but the night before, high winds and blowing snow prompted race organizers to push the race back a day. But come Sunday morning, conditions hadn’t improved enough for a safe race.

After being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Nome-Golovin 200 is back on this year. The annual snowmachine race is scheduled to depart from Nome’s East Beach tomorrow and have racers do the 190-mile loop out to Golovin and back.
