“YOURS FOR WESTERN ALASKA”

(907) 443-5221

A New Hope: Reindeer

Man stands at the doorway to a mobile reindeer processing plant.

In the near future, reindeer may play an increasingly important role as both a subsistence and commercial food source in Western Alaska. The region “could become Alaska’s reindeer capital,” one local leader told KNOM listeners this summer.

Attitude of Gratitude

Girl is in position on gymnasium floor similar to a push-up — body almost parallel to the floor, legs behind her, arms extended — while competing in the Native Youth Olympics “seal hop” event.

“Don’t just give up. You got to keep trying harder and harder so you can achieve what you want to be — your goal in life.” A recent episode of KNOM’s “Caught Doing Something Good” profiled the positive outlook of rural Alaska student Demi Levi, whose determination has led her to success in the Native Youth Olympics.

Board Directives

Group of people stands smiling, outside, in front of green bushes on a sunny day.

Coinciding with KNOM’s 47th anniversary, the mission’s board of directors met in Nome for their quarterly meeting.

Gifts from Retirement Funds

Did you know? Folks who are 70 ½ years and older can make pre-tax donations directly to charity from IRA or other retirement plans. Doing so may help reduce taxable income.

Embracing Culture

Radio deejay smiles inside studio, standing behind sound board, microphone, and computer screens.

With your support, KNOM embraces culture by offering programming that highlights the strength, depth, beauty, and history of Western Alaska.

Shrinking Sea Ice

An aerial view of near-shore ocean ice near the village of Shaktoolik, Alaska.

KNOM airs three daily reports of sea ice location in Western Alaska. This information has been especially important lately, as local sea ice cover has continued to decline, year over year, bringing severe impacts to our listeners.

Double the Blessings!

Two priests wearing headphones sit in front of a radio microphone.

One of the most significant developments in the Western Alaska faith community this year, so far, has been the arrival of two priests who will be ministering to seven parishes in the region. Meet Fr. Thomas Sagili and Fr. Kumar Pasala.

Young Broadcasters of the BSSD

The BSSD Student Broadcasting team in action in Unalakleet, monitoring and capturing the action of the village’s wrestling/cheerleading tournament.

The student broadcasters of the Bering Strait School District go above and beyond to bring local, beloved sporting events to their region. Their story made it to KNOM listeners through your support.
