Much has happened since my last blog post. I travelled to Anchorage, started a knitting class at the community college, and became older and wiser by one year.
My trip to Anchorage was a wonderful break. I felt overwhelmed by things like 40 degree weather, traffic lights, and drive-through coffeeshops, and enjoyed running on the Coastal Trail, spending time with an old friend, and finally getting my Thai food fix. I also experienced my first earthquake, which was pretty exciting. As nice as it was to get out, ultimately it felt really good to come back. To put on an extra jacket, look at houses and dog lots instead of strip malls, sleep in my own bed, and be home.
Just after getting back, I began my first class at UAF’s Northwest Campus here in Nome: “Knitting for Everyone.” I’ve been doing some casual knitting since this summer, but having experienced teachers has given me the confidence to take on some harder projects. I’m currently in the process of making a hat with Scandinavian designs, so stay tuned for updates on how that’s going.
The final exciting event that’s happened since my last blog post is my 23rd birthday. I am now much older and wiser, and, according to my roommates, able to listen to and appreciate the song “What’s My Age Again?” by blink-182, which argues that “nobody likes you when you’re 23.” Regardless of whether or not that’s true, my birthday was full of sweet wishes and celebrations, including many hotlines, a surprise cake, and several birthday songs from KNOM employees far and wide.
With everything that’s happened in the past two weeks, it’s hard to imagine what the next two might bring. As the days get longer and the Iditarod approaches, I know that there are many fun adventures in store, and I’m lucky to live in a place where I’m able to take advantage of each and every one of them.
