The Nome-Beltz Cross Country team competed in the 2016 Class 1A2A3A State Meet at Bartlett High School over the weekend. Nome’s Nanooks placed ninth, while the Homer Mariners took home the boys and girls’ championship titles.
Nome-Beltz top finishers were senior Wilson Hoogendorn and sophomore Starr Erikson. Hoogendorn placed 59th with a time of 18:46s and Erikson placed 46th with a time of 22:49s. Galena’s Jacob Moos crossed the finish line in 15:55s to take first place for the boys and for the girls, Briahna Gerlach of Glennallen finished first with a time of 18:44s.
Led by Coach Jeff Collins, the Nanook boys scored 263 points while the girls scored 273 points to finish out their season. Collins said via email, “The State meet went great…we took 12 athletes to State, of those 12 we will get 11 back next year.”
