Chamber of Commerce President Ken Hughes called new executive director Paul Kosto “a great choice to help the Chamber of Commerce rebuild itself into what it has yet to be.”
In Public Hearing, Nome City Council to Discuss “Nuisance” Properties
New business on the Council’s agenda includes hosting a public hearing on a resolution to declare certain buildings in city limits as fire or health hazards, and/or public nuisances. If this resolution is passed, then the City of Nome could be authorized to demolish at least four properties.
Remains of Polaris Hotel Demolished, Being Removed; Report on Cause of Fire Still Unreleased
According to the City, Q Trucking was awarded the contract to demolish, remove, and haul away the Polaris wreckage by December 26th. In terms of what originally caused the Polaris Hotel to burn down, the investigation into the fire has essentially concluded, but Papasadora says the report is still being put together by the various entities involved.
Security Cameras Installed at Port of Nome
Twenty-one security cameras were installed across the Port of Nome, small boat harbor, and industrial pad.
NPS Board of Education Agrees On Food Services, Revised Budget Moves To Next Phase
During last night’s Nome Public Schools Board of Education meeting, Shawn Arnold, superintendent for NPS, stated that the food services rate with NANA Management Services won’t increase this year.
City Agrees to Provide $4.4 Million for NJUS Fuel Purchase
Nome Joint Utility System will receive a $4.4 million revenue anticipation note from the City of Nome to buy diesel fuel. The purchase will provide for NJUS’s full capacity of fuel: 3.2 million gallons.
Nome Council in Agreement: NSHC and Community Will Benefit From Vacated Property
Through the passage of an ordinance, NSHC will have use of land on East L Street and East M Street, as well as between East 6th and Greg Kruschek Avenue. City Manager Tom Moran explains these properties won’t go out for bid, but the City is negotiating some form of payment with NSHC.
Nome City Council Approves FY ’18 Budgets, Lease Agreement, and Port Commission Candidate
Besides approving all City of Nome budgets, the Council also voted in favor of authorizing a lease agreement with Alaska Marine Lines. For a period of five years, beginning September 1st, Alaska Marine Lines will pay the City $1,540.86 a week for two blocks of property at the Port of Nome.
Ambulance Service Agreement Reached Between NSHC and City of Nome
Nome’s ambulance department has a new arrangement with Norton Sound Health Corporation, a result of meetings and compromise between the NSHC administration and the City of Nome. It goes into effect May 1.
