“YOURS FOR WESTERN ALASKA”

(907) 443-5221

Wildlife and new arrivals

Birds are nesting and salmon are moving upriver as muskoxen roam about, looking for food in small groups. Caribou and reindeer feed on the lush tundra, and bears sit riverside, ready for a fish feast. In Western Alaska during the summer, wildlife truly are both wild and lively – and, often, nearby, in close […]

Meet Emily

KNOM volunteer music director Josh Cunningham has finished his year of service to KNOM. Picking up where Josh left off is our newest volunteer, Emily Bieniek. At his last staff meeting, Josh expressed how grateful he was for the opportunity to serve through KNOM – and how confident he was that Emily will carry forward the […]

“He lifts up the listener…”

We are blessed with the talent of five wonderful, full-time volunteers. Summer is always a time of transition, when our volunteers finish their service and help us welcome a new class of contributors. KNOM volunteer music director Josh Cunningham will be leaving soon. His outstanding service has included three hours of airtime each weekday as an afternoon DJ, […]

Whales!

The temperatures are hovering in the low-50s, and our region’s families are fishing, hunting, and preparing to gather greens and berries. They are also listening to KNOM. The radio is a constant companion for thousands of Alaskans, and if they could, they would thank all who make this radio ministry possible! Last week, KNOM staff covered a […]

Made it to 42!

As you may know, on July 14, 1971, a dedicated staff of volunteers helped to launch a new kind of radio station. KNOM signed on as a mission radio station: a unifying source of inspiration, education, news, and entertainment. At 42 years old, KNOM is the oldest Catholic radio station in the United States. Since 1971, we […]

Hazard averted

Last week, KNOM volunteer Eva DeLappe and volunteer engineer Rolland Trowbridge saved our radio studio. A GFCI outlet in an upstairs bathroom malfunctioned and began shooting sparks, scorching a nearby wall. Eva contacted Rolland, who turned off the electricity and replaced the outlet. (The new outlet is pictured above.) If Eva and Rolland had not […]

Positive momentum

Western Alaska saw record heat, and then the rains came. The ice has finally left the beaches and off-shore waters. Summer is here! Nonprofit organizations of our size have seen a drop in donations of about 9% this year. KNOM was no different – until we asked for prayers and help with our finances. The […]

Time to tighten up

This time of year, we scramble to make sure that we perform routine maintenance on the KNOM buildings and equipment.  As we go through this process, we encounter unusual circumstances. (Several years ago, as we were doing a visual inspection of the AM transmitter site, a herd of muskoxen decided to graze near the tower.) KNOM volunteer […]

Loss, companionship, and service

KNOM Radio Mission president and St. Joseph parish pastor Ross Tozzi has just returned to Nome after ministering to his family and his father Ezio, who passed away May 22nd. Please pray with us for Ezio, Fr. Ross, and his entire family. Thank you. Last week, we received a phone call from a listener who was suffering […]

A DIY solution for an askew building

We’ve been working hard to stretch our financial resources. Sometimes, that means being creative in problem-solving, even when the ground is literally shifting underneath us – as it has, in recent weeks, at our AM transmitter site. KNOM’s AM transmitter building and tower sit on the outskirts of Nome, about 3 miles east of town. From one season to […]
