Wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph are forecast this weekend for the Bering Strait as a low pressure settles in the region. That’s according to the National Weather Service (NWS), which issued a high wind watch on Thursday.
Strong northerly winds are expected to develop Saturday and peak Sunday night, with the strongest winds along a corridor spanning from Gambell to Point Hope. Peak winds of 72 mph are forecast for both Gambell and Diomede while peaks in the 60s are expected in Wales, Teller, and Tin City.
Cooler weather is expected with lows in the single digits north of the Seward Peninsula. Wind chills, meanwhile, are expected to dip into negative numbers in many communities across the region.
NWS said some ice movement is possible near the shore, although ice shoves are not currently expected. The agency said that prolonged exposure outside should be avoided while the system moves through the region.
