This year, Nome’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony struck a particularly resonant chord in the hearts of community members.
Veterans and several others called the station with gratitude for the live broadcasting, so elders could safely tune in from home.
Noticeably absent from this year’s solemn proceedings was Mayor Richard Beneville, who lost his battle against failing health earlier in the month.
Beneville was tremendously proud to live in Nome and be elected as mayor. He was a tour guide, community theatre director, dedicated public servant, former Broadway performer and town booster.
Beneville once told a reporter, “I can sing. I can dance. God gave me lots of talents. But perhaps the greatest talent he ever gave me was being able to recognize talent in others, to challenge that talent, and to bring it out. It’s empowering stuff.”
