Nome-Beltz High School has begun the 2018 sports season, with both cross country and volleyball teams competing this past weekend.
The Kotzebue Cross Country meet brought runners from all over the region, including the Varsity and Junior High Nome Nanooks. Sophomore Bethany Daniel of Nome placed third out of almost 20 varsity girls with a time of 23’40”. Daniel was 18 seconds behind Miah Wolfe of Noatak and crossed the finish line 30 seconds after first-placed runner Zaida Baldwin of Kotzebue.
In the varsity boys’ category, freshman Nanook Tobin Hobbs took second place with a time of 18’28”, just ten seconds behind Amos Sage of Noatak. Almost two minutes faster than Hobbs was the top placed Nome Junior High runner, Son Erikson. Erikson took third with a time of 16’45”.
And for the Junior High Nanook girls, Natalie Tobuk crossed the finish line in fourth after 19 minutes and a few seconds. The Nome-Beltz cross country team will compete again on September 7th for the Nome Invite.
On the volleyball court, the lady Nanooks swept the Kotzebue Huskies this weekend, winning the first set three games to none and the second set three games for, two games against. The Nome-Beltz volleyball team will travel to Houston High School this Friday for their next matchup at the North/South Tourney.
