The highest court in Alaska will have a new head judge behind the bench for the next three years. Starting on July 1st, Justice Joel H. Bolger will replace current Chief Justice Craig Stowers.
Bolger was selected by unanimous vote from all five supreme court justices, in accordance with Alaska’s Constitution. The Iowa born and raised justice was first appointed to the Alaska Supreme Court in 2013.
Bolger serves as co-chair of the Criminal Justice Working Group and as a member of the Alaska Criminal Justice Commission. He has also served on the Appellate Rules Committee and the Fairness Diversity and Equality Committee, in addition to several other committees.
One of Chief Justice Bolger’s duties will be appointing presiding judges for all judicial districts during his term.
