Our 42nd birthday!

Bishop Robert Whelan at KNOM's first broadcast

Did you know? KNOM turns 42 this month.

It was on July 14, 1971 that KNOM-AM first went on the air, with a broadcast initiated by Bishop Robert Whelan, pictured. We’ve been on the air ever since, with the support of so many volunteers, staffers, community members, and of course, kind donors like you. This year, thanks to you, our mission completes its 42nd year of service – and makes preparations for the next 42 years and beyond.

KNOM’s mission is actually a bit older than 42 years; the first volunteers and other workers began laying the groundwork for KNOM in the late 1960s and early 70s. You’ll find lots more history here.
