Norton Sound communities assess flood aftermath

As water levels receded Sunday, Sept. 18, residents in the Bering Strait region began taking stock of the damage done by the strongest fall storm to hit Western Alaska in fifty years. Sea berms were destroyed, homes were flooded or knocked off their foundations, and drinking water sources were contaminated.

Bering Sea Bar and Grill demolished after fire

The Bering Sea Bar and Grill is gone after a fire started in the building the evening of Sept. 17 while Nome was being buffeted by a powerful fall storm. No deaths were reported and the few who were injured recovered.
