A nonresident of the Norton Sound region has tested positive for COVID-19 while traveling into Nome. Meanwhile, the virus has now infected 28 people in Gambell.
According to an announcement from Norton Sound Health Corporation, the traveler tested positive for the virus yesterday as part of the City of Nome’s COVID-19 mandates.
NSHC says the patient will continue safely isolating in Nome until they are fully recovered.
The state Section of Epidemiology and Public Health Nursing will conduct further investigation and contact tracing in this case. This makes one active case of the virus in Nome at this time.
In addition, the community of Gambell has reported six new cases in connection to the local outbreak. NSHC announced the new cases of COVID-19 earlier this afternoon. Gambell has had 28 cases of the virus confirmed in their community over the last two weeks.
Today a resident of a regional village, who was outside of the Norton Sound region, tested positive for the virus as well. According to NSHC, the individual was not in the region at any point during their infectious period.
The total case count in the Norton Sound is up to 91. 25 are currently active while 66 are considered recovered.
