Mountain Village Man Charged With Murder

State Troopers report Alexie Walters, 34, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder following the death of his girlfriend. Walters allegedly assaulted multiple people in Mountain Village before barricading himself inside his home with 22-year-old Gertrude Queenie, who was later found dead.

Municipal Election Results Authenticated, New Councilmen Set To Be Sworn In

According to City Clerk Bryant Hammond, there were 661 ballots cast in this year’s election after ruling out questioned ballots. All five Councilmen present for the meeting voted in favor of canvassing the election results. Adam Martinson and Doug Johnson will be sworn in as Councilmen during the next regular meeting on Monday at City Hall.

Jorie Ayyu Paoli delivered the keynote address at the Kawerak Leadership Summit in Nome. “Our community — we’re like the willow,” she said. “You can cut the willow down, you can cut it back, to try and get rid of it, but if there’s even a shred of root, it will re-grow and thrive.”
