Governor Bill Walker announced on Thursday Alaska will receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to combat heroin and opioid addiction throughout the State.
The $2 million comes from a State Targeted Opioid Response grant which focuses on supporting prevention, treatment, and recovery for those who are struggling with opioid addiction. According to Health and Human Services, all 50 states received a portion of $485 million in grants for prevention and treatment.
In a press release, Governor Walker said, “we continue to make major efforts to address this public health crisis, and it’s good to see that the federal government recognizes the work that has been done so far.”
Walker’s administration is still identifying which State programs and services the funds will go towards.
