Nome Nanooks Battle It Out at “Bush Brawl” Wrestling Competition

Kotzebue’s Bush Brawl wrestling competition brought together athletes from schools in Nome, Shishmaref, Koyuk, Buckland, Unalakleet, and many more this weekend. Nome Beltz wrestlers Sierra Tucker, Caleb Evatt, Ben Cross, Tim James, and Ethan Hannon each won individual championships.

In the high school girls’ 113 weight class, Nanook wrestlers Madison Johnson and Starr Erikson both placed in the top three. Johnson scored nine team points for the Nanooks by placing third, while Erikson placed second with 14 team points.

Sonja Hukill won the Nanooks 14 points and finished third in the 120 high school girls’ weight class. Sierra Tucker was one of Nome’s individual champions; she scored 24 team points in the high school girls’ 132 weight class.

For Nome’s high school boys, Caleb Evatt, Tim James, and Ben Cross were champions in their individual weight classes. 18 team points went to Evatt in the 113 weight class, James won 23 team points in the 160 class, and Cross earned 32 team points in the 138 class. JJ Marble placed third in the same class as Evatt, taking home 7 team points. Elden Cross and David Hasros both finished second in their weight classes. Representing the Nanooks in the 126 weight class, Cross scored 18 team points, while Hasros brought home 12 points in the 285 class.

In the junior high division, Ethan Hannon beat out wrestlers from Koyuk, Kotzebue, and Shungnak to take 24 team points and first place in the 75MS weight class.

Nome’s next wrestling competition will be the Lancer Smith meet in Palmer this weekend.
