Sounding Board: Legalizing Marijuana in Alaska

Didn’t catch the September 18th episode of Sounding Board? It’s available to listen to above.

This week’s show on the ballot measure to legalize marijuana featured clips from:

  • Tim Hinterberger, professor of developmental biology at the University of Alaska Anchorage, and chair of The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol in Alaska, the leading statewide organization for legalization.
  • Kristina Woolston, an Anchorage member of the Coordinating Committee for Vote No on 2: Big Marijuana, Big Mistake, the leading group against this legislation.
  • Bryan Vogel, a doctoral level psychology intern with Behavioral Health Services Department at Norton Sound Health Corporation who spoke about existing substance abuse and the effect marijuana has on the brain and path to sobriety.

Our callers and participants today included:

  • Jonathan from Nome who sent an email saying that he believes marijuana is safer than legal substances like alcohol and prescription drugs and should be regulated as such. He encouraged listeners to do their research.
  • Kerwin in Stebbins also believed that alcohol is more harmful and marijuana should be legalized and regulated.
  • Joanne in Unalakleet reminded us that this initiative is a very serious subject, and raised concerns about the mental health consequences of marijuana use.
  • Marjorie in Nome pointed out that marijuana is already abundant in Alaska and urged that constructive education on the topic and an open dialogue is the next best step.

Remember to tune in next and every Thursday at 10am to join the conversation, on KNOM’s Sounding Board.

This November, Western Alaska has the opportunity to vote on Ballot Measure 2, “An Act to Tax and Regulate the Production, Sale, and Use of Marijuana.”

This week on Sounding Board is your chance to voice your opinion on this controversial bill.

  • How do you plan to vote?
  • How could this bill improve current law surrounding marijuana?
  • On the other hand, how could its passing do more harm?
  • What are you thoughts on current marijuana regulation in Alaska?
  • How do you think this could effect local option in communities?
