Sen. Donny Olson, D-Golovin, has returned to the Alaska State Capitol after suffering a medical emergency in January and undergoing an intensive language therapy program in Chicago.
Olson, who represents Senate District T, completed a 30-day therapy program at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. He resumed his legislative duties over the weekend and expressed gratitude for the support he received during his recovery.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has sent or wrote messages of support and encouragement over the past several weeks,” Olson said in a statement. “Your kindness has meant a great deal to me and my family.”
The veteran lawmaker described his time in therapy as “incredibly beneficial” and said he will continue speech therapy as part of his recovery. However, he emphasized that he feels strong and ready to resume his work in the Legislature.
“I am excited to return to the Capitol and join my colleagues in advancing the important work we have before us this session,” Olson said. “Alaskans deserve dedicated leadership, and I am committed to serving my constituents with the same focus and determination as always.”
Olson has served in the Legislature since 2001. His district covers a vast region, including Nome, the Northwest Arctic, and North Slope Boroughs.
Olson’s return comes as the Legislature moves deeper into the current session with state budget, education funding, and infrastructure top of mind for lawmakers.
