Norwegian musher Joar Leifseth Ulsom had a very good run in 2013. In his first Iditarod ever, he finished in 7th place and took home Rookie of the Year. In 2014, he’d love to finish in the top ten again, and while he knows the competition is stiff, his dogs are looking good.
“They’ve gotten good rest and they’re eating really good… and they’re trained well,” Ulsom told KNOM in Ruby on Friday morning.
They were making good time, too; as Ulsom told our trail reporter, Laureli Kinneen, his run from Cripple to Ruby was the second fastest in the race thus far (second only to Nicolas Petit).
In Ruby, where he’s taking his 8-hour Yukon River layover, it’s time for food and rest, both for himself and for his dogs.
As for Kaltag and beyond, Ulsom says, “I just hope I can keep the speed.”
