With new members sworn in, the Nome City Council rezoned multiple blocks of property during Monday’s regular meeting — and refined the City’s definition of “junk motor vehicles” and the fines related to abandoning junked cars in particular zones.

The City Council could amend Title 5 and Title 18 of the Code of ordinances to update the definition of a junk motor vehicle, then set monetary penalties for the storage of junk motor vehicles in zoning districts other than the Industrial zone.

The Nome City Council passed an ordinance to amend Title 5 and Title 18 with an updated definition of a junk motor vehicle. They also voted in favor of prohibiting the storage of junk motor vehicles in all zoning districts except the industrial one, and implementing fines for any violations. Both ordinances now go to the second reading phase.
