Last month marked another running of Alaska’s epic, 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. 2018 brought a fresh face to the roster of race champions — and saw KNOM volunteer alumni on the trail, both as reporters and even as a competitor.

KNOM has covered the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race each year since its inception in 1973. The 2017 Iditarod was a red-letter year both for its competitors and for our mission and its listeners.

The 2016 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race saw more than 70 teams make the 1,000-mile trek from Anchorage to Nome, traversing Alaska’s vast wilderness. Thanks to you, we covered the race for our listeners, just as we’ve done since its inception in 1973.

A Story 50 Years in the Making

A key part of KNOM’s mission statement is to engage our listeners. Through your support, we strive not only to entertain Western Alaska but to interact with those we serve: to start and sustain conversations on topics and events that are impacting the communities of our region. Sometimes, these are difficult – but no less […]

Our volunteers, busy traveling

Tara and Emily

Our volunteers remain busy! Recently, Tara and Emily (pictured, top) have traveled to the village of Elim (EE-lum) to represent KNOM at a youth career fair, and Dayneé has gone to Kiana (keye-ANN-uh, pictured below) to gather materials for her ongoing radio spot production. Newsie Zach has traveled to Savoonga (as described here) and is just […]

IRS 1040 tax return

We’ve just passed tax season. In April, many of our listeners – like, we suspect, many of our supporters – were busy gathering their paperwork and mailing off their returns. For some in our region, however, it’s not just a matter of breaking out the calculator and double-checking their W-2 and 1040. Non-cash income, as KNOM reporter Zachariah Hughes […]
