Regional Projects Slated to Receive Funding from Capital Budget, Including Nome’s Deep Draft Port

According to the breakdown of projects funded by the new budget, $1.6 million is intended to support the design of an Arctic Deep Draft Port in Nome. The 2018 Capital Budget also awarded Wales $650,000 and almost $100,000 to Koyuk for water system heat recovery projects. Another significant monetary award designated for Western Alaska was given to Mountain Village, so the community can benefit from St. Mary’s wind energy project.

Alaska Native music and dance festivals are powerfully moving events, KNOM volunteer reporter Gabe Colombo discovered in the community of Wales this year. “It was amazing to see,” he says.

The Native dance tradition has been revived in Wales and other communities over the past 20 years, after decades of cultural suppression by colonial forces. Today, as one elder put it, “coming here makes us feel whole.”

Two Wales Men Lost At Sea in a Rowboat

The Coast Guard has suspended its search for Timothy Miligrock and Damian Soolook. The two departed Wales at 2:30am Sunday in a rowboat, were reported overdue 3 hours later, and have not been seen since.
