In Norton Sound, Expect Strong Salmon Runs This Summer

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says salmon runs in the Norton Sound district are expected to be at least as strong as last year, with the exception of king salmon.

After strong salmon runs in Nome and Port Clarence last summer, the regional advisory committee of ADF&G wants to ease regulations on both commercial and subsistence fishing.

As of Thursday morning, an additional 3,700 sockeyes were reported through the Pilgrim River. Area manager Jim Menard says he and his staff are encouraging subsistence fishers to get out there and stop the “red horde” before it overtakes Salmon Lake.
