A land lease regarding Newton Peak has existed for years between the City of Nome and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and will continue for another ten years. Before adjourning the regular meeting, the Nome City Council passed a resolution to support the Graphite Creek mining project.

No comments were made, no discussion took place: all five present councilmen voted “yes” to approve the NJUS budget. Slightly more time was spent on the Council’s only piece of new business: an ordinance to transfer municipal property to Jessica and Howard Farley, Jr., through a lease agreement.

City Council To Deliberate on Surplus Municipal Property, Could Authorize Sale of Two Blocks Tonight

During their regular meeting at City Hall, the Council will also deliberate on one new ordinance and two resolutions. In the first reading phase is an ordinance to adopt tariff #14 which aims to revise and replace all existing tariffs at the Port of Nome.

City Council May Finally Resolve Debate: Should Sex Offenders Be Housed at Seaside?

AMCC’s superintendent, Sandra Martinson, explained during the last City Council meeting that the plan is for sex offenders to serve most of their sentence in a jail or other facility before being transferred to Seaside for treatment. The regular City Council meeting begins Monday at 7pm in City Hall.

The Council was split three-to-three on an ordinance to change the Nome Code of Ordinances to allow sex offenders who are actively receiving treatment to be housed at Seaside. The tiebreaker vote came to Mayor Richard Beneville, who voted yes in favor of moving the ordinance on to the second reading phase.

Older Draft of Nome’s Junk Motor Vehicle Ordinance Fails — But Two Newer Ones Move On

The Nome City Council passed an ordinance to amend Title 5 and Title 18 with an updated definition of a junk motor vehicle. They also voted in favor of prohibiting the storage of junk motor vehicles in all zoning districts except the industrial one, and implementing fines for any violations. Both ordinances now go to the second reading phase.

For Now, Nome’s Junked Cars to Remain Where They Lay, City Council Decides

During last night’s City Council meeting, the one piece of unfinished business on the agenda was an ordinance to prohibit storing junk motor vehicles in any zoning district except for the Industrial District. After two separate votes to amend the ordinance, the motion was ultimately tabled until September 25th.

Nome City Council Approves FY ’18 Budgets, Lease Agreement, and Port Commission Candidate

Besides approving all City of Nome budgets, the Council also voted in favor of authorizing a lease agreement with Alaska Marine Lines. For a period of five years, beginning September 1st, Alaska Marine Lines will pay the City $1,540.86 a week for two blocks of property at the Port of Nome.
