In Kiana, “Ripples” of Positive Change

In rural Kiana, Alaska, a new social group has given youth a platform to encourage each other to be their best, despite the region’s high rates of suicide, domestic violence, sexual assault, and substance abuse. It’s the subject of a recent episode of KNOM’s “Story49.”

KNOM endeavors to connect with listeners, on the air and face to face. Recently, volunteer producer Lauren Frost had the chance to do both during a special youth summit in rural Kiana, Alaska.

Veterinary services are rare — and greatly needed — in rural Alaska. A recent episode of KNOM’s “Story49” documents how a new organization is filling the gap; it takes listeners to the front lines of where pets and pet owners need care the most.

Talking Inupiaq

Inside KNOM studios, Josie Bourdon and Annie Conger record Inupiaq language lesson spots at KNOM with volunteer producer Lauren Frost.

KNOM listeners are learning the Alaska Native language of Inupiaq, one phrase at a time, thanks to Nome elementary teachers Annie Conger and Josie Bourdon and producer Lauren Frost.

Western Alaska’s lack of infrastructure and reliable basic services affect KNOM listeners profoundly. Through your support, it’s been a frequent subject of recent news stories.

An (Ancient) Race Against Time

Rural Alaska is an exceptional place for archaeologists to make new discoveries. But in Shaktoolik, as KNOM’s Story49 recently chronicled, researchers are scrambling to uncover the past — before it’s lost forever.

Through your support, inspiration, education, and news remain the focus of our daily work, as they have been since 1971. Thousands of times each year, KNOM’s broadcasts carry snapshots of our region: of its culture and heritage, its local news and stories, and its faith.
