City Council Discussion on Sex Offenders at Seaside Continues; Final Decision Yet to Be Made
The Council was split three-to-three on an ordinance to change the Nome Code of Ordinances to allow sex offenders who are actively receiving treatment to be housed at Seaside. The tiebreaker vote came to Mayor Richard Beneville, who voted yes in favor of moving the ordinance on to the second reading phase.

The District Attorney in Nome, John Earthman, reminded the courtroom that Rayne Aukongak had a prior conviction from 2011 for similar charges to what he faces now. Judge Romano DiBenedetto ultimately decided to sentence Aukongak to serve one consecutive year for each count against him, adding up to a flat sentence of four years.

According to Troopers, Herbert Barr Sr. of Elim knew the girl was 14 years old and was attempting to engage in sexual activity with her through the internet. Barr was remanded to AMCC for online enticement of a minor and distribution of child pornography.
