September was cooler and drier than normal for Nome and indeed, most of the region, temperatures for the month as a whole averaged one to two degrees below normal. At Nome airport, temperatures during the month ranged from a high of 57 degrees on the seventh to a low of 24 on the 25th.
At Unalakleet temperatures in September range from 60 on the first to 19 on the 30th. Rainfall for the month totaled 1.13 inches. That is only half of normal, and it's the lowest September total since 2011. Now this was not a particularly stormy month for Nome, the average wind speed at the airport was less than eight miles an hour, and peak winds exceeded 30 miles an hour on just three days.
However, the storminess during the afternoon and evening of the 30th was notable, and included the peak wind for the month of 49 miles an hour.
