We’ve got volleyball, wrestling, and swimming in this week’s Nanook Sports Minute.
Starting with swimming, two boys from Nome-Beltz traveled to the Region Six Finals in Valdez. Sophomore Trevor White and Freshman Lathen Ahmasuk competed in the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle events.
Lathen Ahmasuk, who just started swimming this year, just missed the cutoff in the prelims to advance to the finals. Trevor White, meanwhile, went on to finish ninth in the 100 yard freestyle finals.
The Mountain City Wrestling Invitational in Anchorage brought impressive performances from both the boys and girls of Nome-Beltz. Leading the way for the boys, Wyatt Ahmasuk took 2nd place in the Varsity 189 division. Wyatt’s run was electric, winning multiple matches by pin in under two minutes before a tough battle in the finals.
On the girls’ side, Lacey Sherman was once again a powerhouse for the Lady Nanooks, fighting her way to 2nd place in the 145-pound class. With quick pins in her first three matches, Lacey dominated until a close decision in the finals against a tough South Anchorage opponent.
The JV volleyball team hosted Hoonah this weekend and impressed in a 5-set win over their varsity team. They finished winning 2 out of 3 games across the weekend.
Varsity traveled to Barrow High School for the Whaler Invite. There they seeded fourth in pool play before falling to Seward in the first game of the tournament. Their run ended in the losers bracket against Mountain City.
Both wrestling and volleyball will be in action this weekend, the girls will be headed up to Kotzebue for the Western Conference Tourney and wrestling will be right here in Nome for their home invitational. Until next time, this was the Nanook Sports Minute.
