At Tuesday night’s Nome Joint Utility Board meeting (NJUS), Utility Manager John Handeland announced that the last series of scheduled outages, associated with the replacement and straightening of utility poles, were completed for the season.
As of yesterday, ten poles have been changed along City Feeder 1 – the zone associated with the Nome-Council Road – with two more planned within the coming week. Handeland stated the line will withstand winter storms and high winds, though work on “a couple more poles” is expected in the summer of 2017.
In other events, the board unanimously passed a resolution to offer thanks to the Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (NSEDC) Board. Their appreciation was on behalf of the utility consumers in Nome for the NSEDC fuel loan interest rebate for this year. This rebate of more than $73,000 reduced operating costs for NJUS, which allowed for lower utility rates for NJUS consumers.
Finally, the NJUS board will hold a special meeting November 22nd at 7pm during which an auditor from the State of Alaska will present an audit for 2015.
NJUS will meet again for their regular meeting on December 20th.
