After being short on staff, the Kotzebue Department of Motor Vehicles is looking for an alternative agent to run its Baldwin Peninsula physical location.
Marla Thompson, director of the Kotzebue DMV, says the reason for the shortage of job applicants has remained a mystery.
The DMV has been facing these difficulties since early Fall. Thompson’s current solution is to go to bid. That means giving another business the DMV’s responsibilities. The director says that the process isn’t unusual in Alaska. The state currently has 18 affiliated agents taking on DMV duties.
Thompson stresses that the Kotzebue DMV is not facing permanent closure. In the meantime, an Anchorage DMV worker has come to Kotzebue for 4 days to administer road tests. According to that employee working there, lines at the Kotzebue were out the door. After he returns to Anchorage, the DMV will be closed until further notice.
Services the DMV provides can also be done via mail or online. The DMV’s invitation to bid closes March 10th.
