The origin of the fire at 103 East 4th Avenue in Nome is still being investigated. The Nome Police Department now suspects arson may have been a cause for the blaze.

Over the weekend, first responders in Nome battled a major fire at a vacant building on the east end of town. No injuries occurred, but the private residence took heavy structural damage.
According to the Nome Police Department (NPD), dispatchers were notified of the fire around 2pm on Saturday afternoon. Emergency services and NPD officers arrived at 103 East 4thAvenue to find a vacant house ablaze with no sight of anyone near the building.
Nome Police Chief Bob Estes says NPD is asking the community for information about any individuals seen entering or exiting the vacant house around the time of the fire.
At this time, Estes says the cause of the fire is undetermined. As such, the cause and determination of the fire is being investigated by NPD staff Paul Kosto and City Council member Doug Johnson.
