KNOM’s 50th anniversary represented the kick-off for the mission’s radio giveaway. While celebrating with free cupcakes, the first five radios – and, five build-your-own transistor radio kits – were given away.

The dozens of cupcakes given away for KNOM’s 50th anniversary were heartily enjoyed. 
The anniversary cupcakes were made by local baker Kastyn Lie, previously featured on “Caught Doing Something Good”.
The assembly kits were given to teachers and home educators while the radios and boosters went to visitors who knew the answer to KNOM trivia questions, like “What was the first song ever played on the airwaves?” (Answer: “We’ve Only Just Begun” by The Carpenters), or, “What phrase, still in use before each newscast today, did Harry Gallagher coin in 1971?” (Answer: KNOM Update News.)
KNOM primarily celebrated the anniversary virtually, on the airwaves, and here – in The Nome Static – with a virtual tour, a new logo, and by mailing out radios.
Still, the free cupcake giveaway and station tours attracted more than 70 guests. Many of them said they had never been in a radio station before.
Several guests remarked that the facilities are much nicer, more modern, and well-kept than they had envisioned. Some said they did not realize the main studio is right by the front door – in a sense, an open welcome for guests to cozy up to the hometown radio microphone and participate.
