Five new positive COVID-19 cases have been identified in Nome by Norton Sound Health Corporation on Monday, June 7th. An additional case was identified later in the day.
All six cases are considered community-spread. All patients are safely isolating, and close contacts have been notified.
With the addition of the new cases, there are currently twelve active cases in the region – all located in Nome.
NSHC expects to see a higher number of virus cases this summer, due in part to the greater infectivity of the P.1 variant now found in the region. The vaccines are considered to be the best way to prevent the spread of the new variety of COVID-19. Anyone not fully vaccinated is encouraged to continue to practice hand washing, social distancing, and mask wearing until they have had both doses.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks indoors or outdoors. It is also possible to travel outside the region without being tested or quarantining when returning.
Everyone in the area age 12 or older is eligible for vaccination against COVID-19. In Nome, vaccinated clinics are located at the NSHC Pharmacy, at the Nome Airport, and at the Nome Post Office. Village residents should contact their local clinic to arrange a vaccination appointment.
