Longtime KNOM general manager Ric Schmidt was inducted on November 9 into the Alaska Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. He’s the 64th inductee into the ABA’s storied roster of broadcasting leaders.
Ric first served in Nome as a KNOM volunteer in 1984, then returned in 1995 as staff program director. Promoted to general manager in 2005, Ric remained on full-time staff through 2017, when he retired after an incredible career in broadcasting.
Ric received his ABA honors in a ceremony with his family, including wife and current KNOM business manager Lynette Schmidt. He shared the 2018 Hall of Fame distinction with the late John Active, who was a pioneer Alaska Native broadcaster at KYUK Radio in Bethel.

A Nod from the Governor — This month, in Juneau, writer (and KNOM news director emerita) Laureli Ivanoff is slated to receive the prestigious Governor’s Arts and Humanities Award from the State of Alaska, a recognition of her vivid, autobiographical writings that offer insights into the contemporary Alaska Native experience.
One of Laureli’s essays was published last fall in The New York Times.
