Several Close Games at Nome’s 2019 Subway Showdown

Nome-Beltz High School hosted Unalakleet, Grace Christian, and Petersburg over the weekend for the 2019 Nome Subway Showdown. The basketball tournament went from Thursday to Saturday.

A 19-9 run in the fourth quarter of Friday’s ladies’ Grace vs. Unalakleet game brought Grace to victory after the two were tied 26-26. The Lady Nanooks also broke open a tie in the fourth quarter of their game against Petersburg: the girls’ 18-4 streak earned them the win after being tied 28-28 at the end of the third quarter.

On Saturday, tension was high with a series of close games. Unalakleet’s Jewel Wilson scored 18 points, bringing her team to victory over Petersburg 47-44. Aiden Ivanoff led Unalakleet boys, scoring 16 of his 23 total points in the fourth quarter. In an extremely close game, Petersburg took the win over Unalakleet at 63-61.

Both Grace Christian School boys and girls ended up securing victory at the Nome Subway Showdown. The ladies’ Grace vs. Nome game was highly anticipated, as both teams entered the game with a 2-0 tournament record. In a close match, Grace took home the win 42-39. In Grace’s championship game against Nome-Beltz boys, the final score was 58-39.

Three Nanooks took home skills competition awards: Kastyn Lie shot the most free-throws, and Gareth Hansen and Brooke Anunguzuk both won the 3-point contest.

Nome-Beltz varsity boys and girls will face Kotzebue this upcoming weekend at home.
