Fiscal year ‘19 budgets and two municipal property ordinances are on the Nome City Council’s regular meeting agenda tonight.
If passed, one ordinance would authorize the Council to lease a tract of land near the Nome airport to the Federal Aviation Administration for eight years, at a cost of $1,806.39 annually. This strip of property runs through the city cemetery and would allow the FAA to continue operating runway lights in that area.
The second ordinance that could pass tonight is set to vacate the right of way in a section of Block 96 that intersects with Tobuk Alley. Four lots, owned by Kirk Reynolds and Bonnie Piscoya, would be consolidated in order to remove encroachment concerns on that block without putting the property out to bid.
This ordinance is being openly opposed by two Nome residents and Bering Straits Native Corporation, who own land on the same row.
The City Council will deliberate on these ordinances as well as the FY ‘19 budgets during its last regular meeting of May, tonight in City Hall at 7pm. Three Nome Police Department staff are expected to take their oaths of office at the beginning of the Council’s proceedings.
