Nome resident Phil Hofstetter finished 3rd in the 2014 Iditarod Trail Invitational.
He cycled into Nome at 8:00pm Friday March 7th, completing the 1,000 mile race in 12 days and 6 hours. That time is 5 days and 3 hours faster than when he won the race in 2010, and it is 3 days and 5 hours faster than the long-standing record set by Colorado cyclist Mike Curiak in 2000. I talked with Phil at his house about 30 minutes after he crossed the finish line.
Because it was so cold and windy, my eyes started getting this halo effect, and I thought it was frostbite. I though I frostbite my eyes. So I saw the Island Point, and I made a beeline for it. And I think it was like a 5 mile. I ran for it as hard as I could.
