Going down a “crazy” trail with no brake: Joar Leifseth Ulsom in Nikolai

“I would never ever have done it if I knew” how “crazy” the trail would be this year, Joar Leifseth Ulsom told KNOM in Nikolai.

The Norwegian musher, 2013’s Rookie of the Year, caught up with Laureli Kinneen on Tuesday, at which point he described the trail to Nikolai as “really crazy”; the (Dalzell) Gorge, he says – a particularly tricky section of trail in between the Rainy Pass and Rohn checkpoints – was “totally insane.”

Despite his trail woes, and the loss of a sled brake during his run through the Gorge, Ulsom seemed in a good condition and happy with his team’s performance.

As of Tuesday night, Joar Leifseth Ulsom is in the McGrath checkpoint; he arrived with a full string of 16 dogs at 10:09pm.
