This Thursday on Sounding Board (November 21, 2013 at 10am), we’re talking about the Indian Child Welfare Act.
Earlier this year, the US Supreme Court ruled that several sections of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) did not apply to the case of Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl, more commonly known as the Baby Veronica case.
The Baby Veronica case did not change any segment of the Indian Child Welfare Act, but it’s become a springboard to a nationwide discussion of the law.
Let’s bring that discussion to Western Alaska:
- How have you been affected by the Indian Child Welfare Act?
- How has the act impacted your community?
- How do you think the ICWA can be improved?
- Why is it important to be raised within your cultural traditions?
