Nikolai in Photos

What’s a checkpoint look like?

The Iditarod trail passes through a wide variety of terrain – from the forested trails of southcentral Alaska to the treeless expanses of the Seward Peninsula. In Nikolai, where the weather has been mostly warm and pleasant (for humans, at least, if not for the sled dogs), KNOM trail reporter Laureli Kinneen snapped some photos.

In the slideshow below, you’ll find pictures of Martin Buser attending to his team; Ray Redington, Jr. coming off of the south fork of the Kuskokwim River; and Nikolai itself, both day and night.
