Profile: Lunch Fast for Hunger

In commemoration of National Hunger Awareness Day, the Nome Food Bank is encouraging Nomites to join them today for a Lunch Fast for Hunger.

Instead of eating lunch at home, or going out to eat, the fast organizers are asking the community to participate in the lunch time fast and take the money they would have spent on lunch – or the food they would have eaten – and donate it to the food bank.

Löki Gale Tobin is a volunteer with the food bank helping organize the Lunch Fast for Hunger. She and other volunteers will be on hand at the food bank tonight, accepting donations generated by today’s fast.

Food Bank Director Paula Davis says summer demand has spiked at a time when local donations have fallen. She’s been appealing to businesses and organizations throughout Nome for help in filling the food bank’s shelves. A list of requested food items can be found online at the Nome Community Center’s website, NomeCC.org.

Donations for the lunch fast can be dropped off at the food bank tonight (Thursday), at the corner of Bering and Seppala, between 5:30 and 7 o’clock. (See the map below; the Nome Food Bank is located at the green arrow.)
