It’s breakup season! But don’t worry, you’re in no danger of a deluge of sad songs flooding out of your radio. When the rest of the country allegedly has some mythical event called “spring,” Alaska has breakup. Ice breaks into massive floes as it warms. Sea ice is relatively harmless, but river ice-floes float downstream and can sometimes jam and cause massive floods.
While nature’s forces can be dangerous, they also bring life; forest fires clear rotten undergrowth to make room for new trees, storms and floods feed new plants. And this month we will celebrate Pentecost, when when wind and fire brought the Holy Spirit’s new life to the Apostles and gave birth to the Church.
KNOM accompanies Western Alaskans every day with weather reports to help them be prepared, inspirational messages to help them remain hopeful amid life’s difficulties, and prayers to help them connect with God throughout the day. None of this would be possible without your support; thank you for being such a good friend to Western Alaska! If you would ever like to say hello, feel free to reach us by phone at 907-868-1200 or by email at belong@knom.org. We would love to hear from you!
