When News Director Ben Townsend represented KNOM at the Alaska Press Club annual conference in April, he was not expecting to come home with an award, much less four. KNOM’s awards for excellence in journalism were:
- Best feature photo, first place
- Best portrait, second place
- Best multimedia presentation, second place
- Best social media presence, third place
Townsend thanked the community for its support in his first year serving as KNOM’s News Director: ”Obviously we couldn’t do this without our community’s support. We’re incredibly proud to represent Nome and the Bering Strait region on a statewide stage.”
Two awards, best feature photo and best multimedia presentation, were for Townsend’s coverage of the fire that destroyed the school in the village of Stebbins. “I’m just grateful to the people of Stebbins for welcoming me and allowing me to help tell their story. This award is for them much more than it is for KNOM,” Townsend added.
KNOM’s General Manager, Miranda Musich, said that the awards are the culmination of a year of growth across the entire KNOM organization. To see the award winning photo, visit https://knom.org/give/ (Journalism Fund)
