Dogs (and Humans) Prepare for Possible Eruption

Mount Spurr is waking up—and it could erupt in the next few weeks or months! Alaskans are used to dealing with wild earthquakes and roaring wildfires, but volcanoes are a rare and powerful threat. The last time Mount Spurr blew its top was way back in 1992. Now, officials are warning everyone to get ready—especially when it comes to protecting their pets. The ash from an eruption could be full of sharp volcanic glass that stings eyes and makes it tough to breathe. Volcanic ash can disrupt Alaska’s essential supply chain, making it harder to get food and other important goods especially to remote areas not on the road system.

Local vets are telling people to keep their pets indoors as much as possible. If pets must go outside, they recommend using booties, ear covers, dog masks, eye goggles, and even raincoats that cover the belly to help keep them safe. Dusting and shaking off before coming back inside is a must. Alaskans are gearing up to protect themselves, but some admit they grabbed the pet gear first – priorities!
