In the waning days of 2024, Nome-Beltz High School received a distinguished Christmas present: a state wrestling championship.
The Alaska state wrestling tournament was held in Anchorage on December 20-21. As the matches progressed, Nome-Beltz senior Wyatt Ahmasuk dominated his division. He earned pins in every match, until he clinched the championship match with a flourish. In the final round, Ahmasuk raised his opponent in the air and slammed him into the ground to a chorus of “oohs” from the crowd. He then buried his own face in the mat to maximize his leverage and pin him to the ground until the referee blew the whistle.
Ahmasuk returned home with the Division II trophy and the “Star of the State Tournament” title, and several other Nanooks competed with distinction as well.
